Greys Go Away!
The worst thing happened to be this morning. Bleary eyed as I applied my makeup my eyes drifted northward toward my hair line, when gasp I saw them! My pesky, inhospitable grey's were back...again! An unfortunate symptom of stress (or that's what I chalk it up to) I started sprouting a few grey's in my teens. In my early twenties it only got worse. So bad that someone, who in their dire attempt to hit on me, had the audacity to ask my age. When I responded 23, he started laughing and said "No seriously." Apparently my handful of greys lent the appearance of someone much senior. As I've gotten older, I've become uber diligent in touching up my roots in between professional color service. But this morning there was no time or energy to color my roots so I reached in my beauty arsenal...Tuesday, September 28, 2010
Gadgets
I'm a gadgety, accessory type of gal. I believe that there's no such thing as too many lipglosses (not to mention shoes, handbags and scarves for that matter) and I cannot fathom leaving home without my iPad. So when I discovered the newest hair accessory of our generation, a truly game changing gadget that is so intuitive I wondered how I didn't come up with it. Then with great reside I made room in my arsenal for one more toy!Tuesday, September 21, 2010
Humbling
There's nothing more humbling than being proven wrong. Case in point, swearing up and down that you absolutely positively put away your favorite necklace back in the jewelery box. In fact you're so sure that you've decided some phantom jewelry thief must have come in the middle of the night, snuck undetected past the 3 dead bolts and took this prized piece. Of course after turning the apartment upside down with fraught anxiety you realize (oops!) that you left it in your purse when it was your turn to stay at "his place". Definitely humbling!Saturday, September 18, 2010
Fashion's Night Out
The fashion queen, Anna Wintour, may inspire a lot of controversy. Is she really the Devil Wears Prada? Or perhaps a more discontent soul as glimpsed in The September Issue. One thing she is, is creatively brilliant. Case in point the multi-country, continent-hopping shopping party known as Fashion’s Night Out. A brainchild of Wintour’s, these Halloween meets News Year’s event did not fail for the second consecutive year. Hundreds of retailers opened their doors, hosting exclusive perks from supermodel assisted photo shoots to complimentary Shake Shack burgers. And the house of Chanel took this special evening to do what it does the best. Launch their fall’s destined for cult status nail polish palette.Billed as exclusive for Fashion’s Night Out, the iconic brand introduced not just one polish but three! Inspired by all things khaki Chanel’s Creative Director, Peter Philips, interpreted the globally relevant hue in three ways. Khaki Vert builds on the success of the green hued polish movement (remember Chanel's Jade?) but with an added relevancy of sophisticated military flair. The mossy, foam green shade sold out in a mere 45 minutes at the Chanel boutique and inspired ladies to stand in hour long lines for a complimentary manicure. Khaki Rose is more feminine, approachable shade with hints of pinky, earth clay. The most organic shade of the collection, it is perfect for those who prefer a more sensible color. And finally my favorite! Khaki Brun is a breath of fresh air to the overplayed greige shades of Spring. A new, more tastemaking generation, this complex shade evolved in different lights. In dim lit settings it reads a creamy mocha while the sun brings out undertones of olive and bark. While the collection was billed as a one night exclusive, Chanel is making them available to all for a limited time on their website. These colors won't last long so start clicking away to fall nails (they're already on EBay for a mere $135! Outrageous).
Usage tip: If you're bold and edgy enough do as Chanel recommends and paint nails with all 3 in an alternating pattern.
The result: Truly exclusive fall colors from the king pin of nail polishes with no wannabe versions in sight.

Fall Ball
You can almost feel the shift. September rolls around and within the first few days the air becomes crisp, the day’s suddenly become shorter and sandals become replaced with the requisite ballet flats. Inevitably we come to the realization that summer is slipping way and we must usher in fall. As we prepare for the new season with wardrobe updates (side note: was everyone disappointed with the September fashion issues as I was? Total let down after lugging around those 10 pound magazines!) we must also “fall-ize” our skin, hair and nails in an effort to recover and recuperate from the summer damage. The 5 Ways to Beautify for Fall:
1.Revive lackluster hair color!
Sun, chlorine and sea water breaks down color pigments leaving a brassy or in some cases green tinge. Banish brasiness with Aveda Blue Malva Shampoo (you need blue or purple-toned shampoos to neturalize the reddish tones). Restore color vibrancy with a DIY gloss treatment. Fekkai and Nice N' Easy have great glazes. To enhance color try a color depositing shampoo. Look for one that is in your shade range.
2. Restore softness!
The same culprits mentioned above can also strip and dehydrate hair making your strands feel more straw-like than baby soft. Quench your hair with mega moisture. Apply a moisturizing, strengthening hair mask (I like Kerastase Nutridefense Treatment) on wet, clean hair from mid-length to ends. Wrap hair and cover with a plastic shower cap. Quickly heat hair by running your hair drier over the shower cap. Make sure to leave 2-3” distance between the cap and the nozzle to avoid a meltdown situation! The heat helps “seal” the active hydrators. Leave the mask on for 20-30 minutes then rinse.
3. Shed the snakeskin!
Have you ever noticed that by the end of summer your skin starts to take on a leathery appearance? Not only does the sun dehydrate skin but it also causes the skin to thicken (a natural protective mechanism against UV rays). Slowly skin’s natural radiance and glow are muddied away. Not to fear, with some careful exfoliation your skin will be bounce right back. After cleansing, slough off dead cells by using a body exfoliating cream. I like Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Soy Milk and Honey Body Polish. Up the ante and use a dry brush to help enhance the exfoliation! For the face I recommend Freeze 24*7 IceCrystals Anti-Aging Prep & Polish. On a clean face work the exfoliator in small circular motions. Don’t apply too much pressure or you will irritate the skin and cause microtears.
4. Restore the porcelain! Noticing a few more freckles or even dark spots that were never there? Not uncommon if you've spending time in the sun which causes an increased production of melanin. Break up these unevening clusters with a brightening treatment. I swear by Skinceuticals Pigment Regulator. Apply over dark spots twice daily and use SPF everyday (even if you're office bound!). This will not only prevent new spots but discourage the existing ones from darkening.
5. Buff away!
Just like your skin, your nails need a little resurfacing, brightening action. After soaking your nails in a warm water with lemon juice (half a lemon for hands and a whole lemon for feet), take a nail buffer and exfoliate the top layers of your nails. Keep your fingers polish free for a few days so they can breathe!
Usage tip: You may need to repeat some of the treatments above to get the best results. Use the hair mask once a week, exfoliate twice weekly and of course the step 4 is twice a day for at least 4 week commitment!
The result: Now you're ready for fall!

Summer Love
There are so many delightful things about summer. And despite the fall-like weather NYC has been experiencing as of late (and the fact that my office feels like Antarctica making me look like a bodyless mummy as I bury myself in sweaters, scarves and jackets) I think it’s good to walk down the summer memory lane. There’s of course the long days ensuring that you get to at least see the sun as you make your way home from work. Weekends spent poolside, beachside or bbqside. And who doesn’t love Sunday night ice cream? Of course like all things there are some less than positive side effects of summer: sun parched hair, callused feet and perhaps a few breakouts in places you never thought possible.Yes as the weather warms up your oil glands go into overdrive causing unwanted pimples not only on the face but also the body like arm, back, etc. And like all cruel ironies in life it’s still summer so you want to be able to flaunt it not hide in layers of clothing. Not to fear there’s a solution: breakout fighting body wash like Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash in Pink Grapefruit. Like all body washes it cleanses and refreshes skin but this body wash works one level deeper with the power of salicylic acid, a beta hydroxyl acid that helps break the bonds between dead skin cells to exfoliate and unclog pores. As you energize your senses with naturally derived grapefruit extract and brighten skin with vitamin C, the body wash cuts through oil and pore clogging aggressors without stripping skin. After a few washes, skin is visibly softer, smoother and breakout free!
The result: No more red, bumpy spots on that sun-kissed, toned arm as you show off your new strapless sun dress without needing a cover up sweater!

Caring for Beauty
Oddly enough in my family I’m known as the “tech” person. The person mom calls when she makes the jump from a cell phone to a blackberry. The person who’s supposed to know the magic button that makes the new flat screen go from wide screen to full screen… over the phone. And the “go to girl” who installs and sets up new electronic toys in under 30 minutes. So you can only imagine the irony when I received a supped up juicer, decided to not waste my time reading the manual and instead start juicing! Well it only took me 5 minutes to blow the poor little machine up! What a humbling reminder that no matter how much of an expert you may be it’s not a blow (literally!) to the ego to just brush up on the “how to’s.”
When it comes to the world of beauty we often discard the box with the instructions and prefer a roll up your sleeve and do it attitude. This may work sometimes but it’s the finer print on the box detailing how you should use and care for your products to maintain maximum efficacy for the best results. Since I know all your beauty instruction boxes are in a recycling center somewhere (yes all boxes, bottles, tubes and jars are recyclable so please do your part to be eco-fficient) I thought it would be good to review the fundamentals.
Top 3 Ways You Should be Caring for your Beauty Products:
1.Close the cap!
Basic, right? Well in the wee hours of the work day morning or after an exhausting evening it may seem too challenging to full screw the cap or to firmly close the flip top but if you don’t you risk “deactivating” your precious product. Some products contain air sensitive ingredients like retinoids or vitamin C and if the formula is exposed to oxygen the ingredients oxidize rendering them inactive. So rather than apply “dead” cream night after night thinking your skin is becoming ageless just close the cap
2. Keep it cool!
What happens when you don’t keep your produce, dairy or veggies in a cool, refrigerated environment? It goes bad! Well the same logic applies for your beauty products. Hot, steamy showers don’t equal efficacious products. Instead extreme temperatures can cause the product to “age” faster and inevitably lose it’s mojo. So store your products in a dry, room temperature (no higher than 67 degrees). If you’re an over achiever and want extra credit, store your products in the fridge to maintain their freshness (side note I keep my nail polishes there too!).
3. Know the age!
Some time sensitive products like sunscreens or retinoids are labeled with expiration dates. Be sure to adhere to these dates because not only does an expired product not work but you risk experiencing an allergic reaction to the spoiled formula. If you’re product does not have an expiration date then look on the back panel for the open jar symbol. That tells you how long the product will remain active after opening.
Usage tip: While you’re getting refresher in caring for your beauty products why not also glance through the 101’s of beauty care.
The result: Now at least you will be using products that “do something” and deliver on their advertised promises.

Science 101
Let's take it back...back in the day (if you can recall from what song that is I would be impressed!). So here's the scenario: you're back in your sweet sixteens, just finished lunch break where you were trying to catch the attention of your new crush and now it's time for the buzz kill...science class! Mrs. Hall is going on and on about something called pH which determines acidity or alkaline value and all you can think is who cares and when the hell can I get out of here and study something that I care about like how to become rich by doing nothing! If only you knew that fateful science class held the key to keeping your skin ageless.Sunday, August 8, 2010

Innocent Days
Every once in awhile it’s nice to blow caution to the wind and embrace your inner child. Afterall the days of summer camp, ice cream trucks and making forts were composed of innocence and simplicity. Why get done up in a strapping Shift dress and high heels when you can run around the backyard barefoot with your sundress whipping around your legs? Ahh those truly were simpler times and for Spring/Summer fashion’s big designers seemed to find something enviable in it too! From Miu Miu to Alexander Wang strategically disheveled side braids ruled the runway. The look is less “perfect ballerina tightly woven braids” and more inspired by that carefree child who spent the day running around the backyard. Scruffier than its original counterpart, these braids should reflect a rougher texture and matte finish (it’s time to put down the shine enhancing serums!). Backstage stylists would tease strands and treat them with dry shampoo to get that matte grittiness before braiding. Remember this look is all about the imperfect. Hair should be deeply parted to the side or not parted at all for that “too cool for school look.” Start the braid at the nape of the neck and continue to a side. Once your braid is complete, secure with a clear band (no ribbons or bright hair ties please!) and then gently rough up the braid so it captures that disheveled, tousled look. Ideal for managing hair in high, humid temps, this style has equal parts playground innocence and rolled around the bed naughtiness.
Usage tip: Hair too short to muster a braid? With the help of V-shaped pins and a faux pony you can add your own extensions for the needed length. Just remember to rough up and tease the braid after securing it to your hair.
The result: Remember running around the schoolyard as the boys chased you for an opportunity to pull one of those braids? Ahh that was puppy love!

Bronze the Right Way!
So we covered the art of creating the beach bronze look in Monday's post but I'm sure you noticed that one key body part was omitted! Selecting and applying a facial bronzer is a science to say the least. Just the other day I noticed a girl who was not so familiar with this expertise. Her face looked not bronze but dirty, as if she hadn't washed her face in quite a long time. And the worse part was the "sun kissed look" stopped abruptly at her jawline leaving the eye wondering about what happened to her pale decollete and arms.So in hopes of avoiding this serious faux pas I think it's important to understand the 101's of facial bronzing.
Rule 1: Pick the right color!
Your color should 2-3 shades darker than your natural skin tone. Fair skin tones should look for beige shades with a touch of warmth with rosy gold/peach undertones. Olive skin tones like myself should opt for brown bronzers with gold undertones (I use MAC Bronzing Powder in Bronze). Darker skin tones should use rich use rich bronze with hints of orange or apricot. On a side note I'm a bigger fan of pressed powders than loose one. I think they're easier to apply and control color deposit (a key to not looking dirty!)
Rule 2: Apply it the right way!
Using a fluffy powder brush (it helps evenly apply the color with a more a dispersed stroke) lightly dust the areas on your face that the sun would hit and naturally tan. Another words apply along your hairline, on the bridge of your nose, above the brows and on top of your cheek bones. Placement is key for believablity...I know you're saying "duh" but trust me some people still don't understand the concept of less is more!
Rule 3: Always apply in natural light!
Lighting is key to the application. Bronzing in dim lighting and you risk over doing it. So always apply in the brightest indoor lighting you can find to help mimic the effect of sunlight. It's
best to apply in front of a full or half body mirror so you can gauge the bronzing effect in relation to the rest of your body's skin tone. Remember there's nothing worse than a "bronze mask" effect!
Usage tip: Like all good things in life moderation is key. Always apply with light, gliding strokes. Remember you can build more color but it's harder to de-bronze. Matte powders are preferred to avoid a "greasy" look but once you become an expert you can start weaving in a slight shimmer on key areas (read: bridge of nose, brow and cheek bones). I love MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Gold Deposit.
The result: No faux Louis' for you! You've mastered the art of bronzing!

Short Cuts
Have you heard the saying "it's not how hard you work but how smart you work?" Yes you can play by the books and take the brown nosing route...Or you can get a bit clever, cut a few corners and get to the end destination in a faster, more efficient way. Think Mercedes CLS versus the Honda Accord. So when it comes to the bronzed, sun kissed look you can be the good girl and reside yourself to the policy that no matter how Gisele-esque the tan may look there is absolutely no way you would ever consider frolicking in the sun… so white and pasty it is! Or you may play the street smart route and admit to yourself that “I just got back from a beach vaca” look is desirable and more importantly attainable. With the right know how and savviness your bronze goddess look is a bottle and a few strokes away sans (that’s without in Français of course!) sun damage or premature UV induced wrinkles.Usage tip: All smart girls love a little shimmer so mix the foundation with a loose luminescent powder like Laura Mercier Shimmer Loose Powder in Sun Dust and Star Dust (look at what it does for your cleavage!) and then apply. Think Victoria Secret annual lingerie fashion show bronze!
The result: Those minis and short shorts were made for bronze gams, not vampire skin!

Beam Me Up!
I'm pretty sure I've already told you the story of my first waxing experience, but here's a quick recap.Terrified and unwilling to get out of the car in the parking lot of the salon my mom leveled and shared what has come to serve as my mantra toward all the odd and uncomfortable beauty rituals. She said "It hurts to look beautiful." And with that the excruciating pain from my first underarm wax became the discomfort of a brow threading appointment to the needle pricking sensation of acid peels and who can forget the brow sweating Brazilian appointments? So it was only a matter of time I succumbed to the next beauty summit...the art of laser hair removal.Wednesday, July 14, 2010
Beachy Keen

Without question when it come to hair you have to have the same minimalist touch. There’s nothing more painful or torturous than a hair dryer or flat iron in 90+ degree weather! Luckily there’s nothing more sexy or enticing than lose, tousled summer beach waves. They beg you to come play and recall days spent surfside and night loungin campside. So it’s time to give your hair a break and trade in the gels, mousses, and heat activating milks for Fekkai Beach Waves. This marine water spray texturizes hair for that ocean inspired, piecey body. Sea kelp hydrates and locks in moisture so hair looks supple and feels soft. The icing on the cake? UV filters which protect hair from oxidizing UV rays which rob hair color of vitality and cause fading. And as your sitting at your desk wishing to be at the beach, catch a whiff of you hair...the coconut undertones will transport you to the beach.
Usage tip: On a damp or dry hair spritz focusing mid-length to ends. Each 3-4” section needs no more than 2-3 sprays then use your fingers to scrunch strands giving extra support for the waves. For extra thick, long or super straight hair you may need a bit more coaxing to get this look. I would recommend first setting damp hair with rollers and then spritzing with the Beach Waves.
The result: This look demystifies guys obsession with the girl next door…it spells low maintenance, fun loving but yet damn sexy.

Just One More!
I know what you're thinking. How many products can this girl have? She recommended over 10 products just for the pool/beach alone! She must be like one of those old women who lives in a shoebox stuffed with old trinkets, tokens and other useless mementos. Well... I will say that I do have a fair share of products BUT they are all essential (and discreetly stored in an organized manner!). So you too can make room for a couple more sun essentials but this time for your hair!Wednesday, July 7, 2010
Accessorize
One of the many things that I love about being a women is our god given right to accessorize. From bangles that dangle on every inch of our forearm to the plethora of head bands, we have an opportunity to dress up every aspect of our life. Let’s just take the multitude of options available for our “most needed” electronic devices. That blackberry or iPhone that’s responsible for finger and wrist issues? Oh yes, it has to be clothed with a decorated case at all times. The iPod? Don’t worry it has convertible holder that allows it be used 3 ways. The lap top? Did you see Goyard's carrying case? It’s a must have! And of course all of these essential items can’t be carried around without our favorite accessory of all…the handbag! So when it comes to sun protection it should come as no surprise that there are plenty of accessories to go around! But like all things, we need a discerning eye to weed through the garbage and identify the must haves:
1. UVSunSense Bracelet: This wrist bling is takes the concept of adornment to the next level. An intuitive bracelet, this sun monitor identifies what SPF level you’ve applied and changes colors to indicate when you should be reapplying sun creen and when it’s time to head indoor. With this sun smart system there’s no reason you should ever end up looking or feeling like a cooked lobster.

Best in Class
Have you noticed that we’ve become a “best” obsessed society. Everything we do, wear, consume, own or even believe in must be the absolute best. And so when the “best” e-reader (iPad-it does more than the rest) or Chanel lipstick (did you see the waitlists for Rouge Coco Mademoiselle?) launches we herd like brainwashed sheep into atrocious long lines often days before this “best” is even available to be the first to have the “best.” But I guess that’s just the way evolution has preprogrammed us. Supported by Darwinian theory of survival of the fittest we, like active hunters, seek out the best in class, so that we have the right tools and resources to be the best version of ourselves. So with that I would like to present to you the best in class suncare, itemized by your lifestyle, skin type and protection level. This way you will be armed with the “best” as you spend the holiday weekend poolside, beachside or bbqside.Active: Coppertone Sport Continuous Spray SPF 70+ mists your body with a weightless veil of essential protection that resists water and sweat. Skin feels bare as you spike that volleyball.
Beach Bound: If you’re like me you hate the way sand and your sticky body seem to be magnets for one another. That’s why I love Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 100. It’s virtually invisible, drying instantly while keeping UV damage at bay with their Helioplex complex of UV filters.
For the Kidos and the Family: I’m sure you read the last post where we covered the mildest yet most comprehensive sun protection so it should come as no surprise that I recommend Neutrogena Baby Lotion SPF 60. Yes I know your 3 year old is not a baby but this sunblock is formulated with physical filters that are naturally derived treating the skin as delicately as possible.
Sensitive Skin: You know the answer! We covered it last time!
Anti-Aging: It’s essential that your suncare care not only has broadspecturm protection but that is also fortified with super power antioxidants like vitamins C and E to protect skin from free radical damage. I recommend the Neutrogena Spectrum+ range with offerings for the face and body or La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 available in a fluid (so amazing!), lotion or milk.
Usage tip: Remember the 5 essentials rules! They should always be your sun mantra.
The result: Flawless, discerning protection custom chosen for you! I wish you, your family and friends a Happy 4th of July! Enjoy…but remember the sunscreen!

Green SPF

I can't tell you how tired I'm of reading yet another article about some sort of chemical ingredient causing cancer, severe allergic reactions or even fetal deformities. It seems like there's nothing left we can eat, drink, rub on ourselves, wash our clothes or even paint our houses with without worrying about the consequences. So the 15 year double digit growth of organic and natural products only makes sense in this environment. Despite recessions, budget cuts and trading down consumerism the natural and organic sector has thrived not because it's trendy but because there's a validity behind it...it's safer, better for you and for the environment. Luckily when it comes to sunscreen there is a widely available natural alternative.Wednesday, June 23, 2010
No Nonesense
There are some topics that are just so juicy they ooze sexiness, like the new come hither mascara or the cleavage enhancing bronzing technique...and then there are the other subject matters. Topics not as enticing or delicious but equally if not more important, like sun protection, an apt subject matter for the summer season and upcoming 4th of July holiday. So for the next few posts we will focus on the ins, outs and in-betweens of suncare. It won’t be juicy (think grade school sex ed vs experiential learning) but at least you will be become an expert in properly protecting yourself from harmful UV rays. With the incidence of melanoma not only on the rise but higher than the number of new cases of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer combined there’s no excuse in not being suncare savvy.1.What does SPF mean?
SPF=Sun protection factor and is an indicator of how much UV exposure your skin can tolerate before burning while wearing sunscreen versus not being protected at all. So the higher the SPF the greater the shield. Some people like to do creative math and assume that if they're skin can tolerate 10 minutes of sun before burning then an SPF 50 will allow them to stay out for 500 minutes (10 x50). Unfortunately what this equation doesn't consider is the intensity of the UV rays. This is of course dependent on time (sun is always strongest around 2pm) location (UV rays are stronger in higher elevations and places closer to the equator). Bottom line? Apply sunscreen (an SPF 30 at a minimum but I recommend at least a 50).

Thermal Instincts

There are certain things in life that provide comfort and security...mom's cooking, an embrace, perhaps it may even be the feeling of freshly cut grass between your toes. For me the greatest sense of content and peace is found in the calming feeling of water. From enticing waves, to droplets of rain there's a therapeutic rush, perhaps that's why I've come to love scuba diving (who knew?!). But beyond the sensorial the benefits of water for mind, body and spirit have long been documented. From thermal baths to Turkish hamam's, water has a transforming restorative and healing power. Unfortunately we don't all have the time, location or resources to indulge in these treatments which is why like all great things I'm grateful for the bottled version readily at your disposal.Tuesday, June 15, 2010
Lipstick Effect
There’s effects that defy science, rational and reason. They surpass the constraints of textbooks, usurping any mathematical equation and yet they persist. Take for example the dating theory “you need a date to get a date.” It’s the infallible way how one scheduled date suddenly snowballs into multiple suitors. Or take the Calvin Klein Obsession men’s cologne effect. Zookeepers at the Bronx Zoo found that Jaguars liked to lick, kiss, rub and linger near anything sprayed with the cologne versus other fragrances. (Attention male readers: women are more discerning than these cats so don’t shower yourself in this cologne hoping for any attraction!). In previous economic downturns, researcher identified the lipstick effect: a double digit rise in lipstick sales while other beauty products experienced a downturn. The logic economists argued was that lipsticks were a low cost item that instantly made women feel better...that was of course until the current recession when the lipstick effect just wore off.Usage tip: Make sure when you visit the beauty counter to really spend some time with the shades. Be realistic about the colors you gravitate toward and what your comfort level is with hue intensity. Think of this as an investment and you deserve great returns.
The result: Remember what Gucci under Tom Ford did for your wardrobe? Then imagine what he can do for your lips!

Simple Math
Here’s a confession….I’m a nerd. I think in terms of equations, numbers and algorithms. Years after my schooling the Pythagorean theorem (remember a2 + b2 = c 2 for triangles?) still makes perfect sense to me. I know you’re wondering what the hell this has to do with beauty but hang in there with me. So let’s move this mathematical thinking to our perception of beauty. What + what = radiant, youthful, healthy skin? I will just toss out a few ideas and you tell me which sounds right. Luminous? Dewy? Hydrated? Energized? Remember option D on the multiple choice tests which standed for “all the above” and it was always the right answer. Well this time is no exception. So the next part of this multi-step math problem is what universal product provides these elements?Saturday, June 5, 2010
Eating Your Cake
What do you think of the term "fake it till you make it?" You see I've never been a person to fake anything...I've always come from the school of thought that it's the real thing or nothing (afterall I think we all know how to spot the fake Louis' and Cartier's). But ever so often there comes a time where the most prideful of us need to bend our strong convictions for that exception. In this case the exception would be tanning. The reality is we all love that bronze beach goddess color but know the hazards of tanning (wrinkles, sun spots, sagging, let me know when you get the picture). But luckily shade patrol doesn't equal a chalky white color. With the plethora of self-tanning products available an enviable sun inspired glow is just a bottle away. The key? Your technique. Like all things there's a right way and wrong way of doing it.How to Fake a Natural Tan
1. Exfoliate! This helps remove dead skin cells for an even base.
2. After towel drying apply a thin layer of body moisturizer paying special attention to drier areas like the elbows.
3. My favorite self tanner is St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Lotion because it gives a true "bronzed" color versus the orangey tinge more often achieved through self tanners. A word to the wise, this lotion will give your skin a deep tan so if you are fairer or want more control over the color I suggest St. Tropez Gradual Tan Mousse. The mousse has a lower amount of DHA (the molecule which interacts with your skin to develop the color) so the tanning effect will be more mild. Apply the product from the bottom up starting at your legs and working up to your chest and arms. Smooth onto skin and apply with long, firm strokes. Avoid rubbing in which could lead to streakiness or darker spots. Systematically apply making sure to never miss a spot (which includes gently applying to tops of feet and back of hands) and blend carefully. Remember the goal is to look sun kissed so no bare spots! Side note: I never like to apply self tanner to my face...rather I think this is an effect better left to makeup. That way you can contour, define and bronze in a controlled manner. We will cover this soon.
4. Don't put any clothes on for at least 10 minutes to let the product properly dry and when you do finally clothe avoid whites which could show some rub off of the tanning product. Shower 4 hours later at which time your bronze color should be fully developed.
Usage tip: If you do end up with streakiness or dark spots take a lemon and gently rub it over the area to help smooth out the color. Apply the self tanning lotion once a week or the mousse every other day to maintain your color. If you want to deepen the tan apply more frequently.
The result: Bronze goddess sans the sun induced wrinkles and age spots...I think they call that having your cake and eating it too!

Certified Discreteness
Don’t you just love to keep people guessing? In the overly exposed, reality show centric society we’ve become it seems only normal that the stranger in the Starbucks line should know about that weird rash you can’t seem to get rid of and how your match.com profile is getting more hits than the latest celeb sex video (note to everyone please maintain your spa voices when you’re on the phone in public places including the train, elevator and coffee lines….no one really cares to hear about your problems). I think it’s time for a countermovement: something discreet yet sinful, covert yet headturningly intriguing. And what better place to start this coyness than with your lips. The result: Your lips will never feel so smooth, so soft, so voluptuous but I never kiss and tell!

Opal
There are certain statements or questions that simply do not warrant an answer under any circumstances. My all-time favorite is when people tell you how tired you look. How do you even respond to that? “Thanks?!” One of the telltale signs of fatigue is under eye bagginess/puffiness. It’s a quick indicator that for some reason or another overstretched with responsibilities and under indexed on tlc. The beauty of beauty? (Catchy, huh?) We always have a fun, techy gadget or product to save the day.Just off their blockbuster launch of the Sonic Care Cleansing Systems, Clarisonic has introduced a new offering but this time for your eyes. The Opal, cleverly shaped like a luxurious stone begging for you to touch it, is comprised of two parts. The top, if you will, contains their proprietary Anti-Aging Sea Serum and is applied first to the eye area. The bottom contains a small round head that when turned on gently vibrates as you move it around the eye bag area. Helping the serum penetrate into the skin, the sonic massage helps boost circulation to reduce puffiness while giving your eyes a pampering soothing experience. Think of it as a massage for the eye area. Between the serum and the sonic head, the eye area is hydrated, firmer and depuffed. Is it worth the $245 price tag (by the way? I’m not so sure…you can buy one of the many eye rollers on the market for a fraction of the price and get the same benefit. But I will say the micro vibrations were quite a treat for my eyes, it was a calming pre-sleeping treat (and I got the most skeptical person to agree)!
Usage tip: Try on clean eyes before applying your eye cream. Be careful to not use it around the eye socket, a vibrating eye ball is good only for the horror or sci-fi books. Follow with an eye cream. It’s not emollient enough to hydrate the eye area.
The result: Bags be gone! Take that Ms. You Look So Tired!

Eavesdropping
While I found her ease to publicly display her martial problems on a busy intersection a bit interesting, I understand where she's coming from (side note: I'm known to be a bit of a sleeper myself. Read: don't try to deal with me unless I've gotten my 8.5 hours of sleep), there's a significant amount of validity to what she's saying. It is during the sleeping hours that your body has a change to repair, recover and regenerate. That's why it's called beauty sleep. While you're off dreaming about Mr. Right and the beautiful kids you will have your body is repairing sun (photo) induced DNA damage, synthesizing essential proteins such as elastin and collagen and treating any inflammation (ie. breakouts). And in case you haven't heard you need between 7-8 hours of zzz's nightly no ifs, ands or butts. Have trouble sleeping? Try spraying some lavender essential oil on your pillow (my go to choice) or lull your body into sleep mode with a relaxing bath or a cup of warm milk and honey (it really works). If plump, smooth, wrinkle-free skin isn't enough of an inspiration to hit the sack, studies show that when you get less than 7 hours of sleep your body produces more of the stress hormone, cortisol, which encourages your body to store fat leading to weight gain...do I see you heading to bed?
Usage tip: There's nothing more unattractive than pillow lines that can cause collagen and elastin breakdown leading to wrinkles. Opt for silk pillowcases that help skin retain moisture, leave hair tangle free and skin lineless!
The result: Look in the mirror the next time you get a good nights rest...your skin is plump, radiant and youthful! This is the cheapest tool in your anti-aging regimen!

Flawless Inspiration
There are certain rituals, end of the day destressors if you will, that we eagerly look forward to. Regardless of how many times your boss says "we should do this" instead of what she really means ("you need to take care of this") you count on these self-soothing acts. For me it's the few moments I spend lovingly admiring my new orchid plant. With 8 blooms and 5 on the way, I watch mesmerized by the pristine white petals glistening like fresh snow and the perfect asymmetry right down to its reproductive organs (no smirking!). The truth of the matter is we are a society obsessed and appreciative of flawless perfection. We want our faces plump like a babies, smooth like silk and radiantly even toned like the orchid petal.Tuesday, May 11, 2010
Blow

Dry Bar new to the Brentwood area is a one stop blowout haven. Don’t get confused, this sleek white, trendy yet comfortable salon doesn’t offer cuts, colors or anything in between. They only do one thing and they do it right…long lasting, movie quality blowouts! Chose your blowout style from one of the five enticing bar options: Straight Up (the signature), Mai Tai (messy and beachy), Southern Comfort (lots of volume), Cosmopolitan (loose curls) and Manhattan (sleek and smooth). Then sit back as your hair is washed, expertly styled in under 30 minutes! And oh did I mention it’s only $35?! Yes you read that right! So as you sip the cucumber infused water and catch up on your emails or sinfully take a mental break with the latest US magazine issue your hair is transformed from so-so to head turning, "I just appeared in the latest Kerastase ad!" The best part is the blowouts last 3 days so it’s one less thing for you to worry about. All I can tell you is if I lived in LA I would be there for a standing weekly appointment (afterall a girl has gotta pamper herself). Other major cities have similar concept salons. In NYC check out the original, Blow. Downside: price varies from $40-60 based on length or texture. In SF take advantage of the newly opened Blo (cost is around $33).
Usage tip: Book in advance. This place is more popular than the local Peet’s Coffee!
The result: Perfect for date night or just cause, this quickie will take your hair to the next level.
