Best in Class

Have you noticed that we’ve become a “best” obsessed society. Everything we do, wear, consume, own or even believe in must be the absolute best. And so when the “best” e-reader (iPad-it does more than the rest) or Chanel lipstick (did you see the waitlists for Rouge Coco Mademoiselle?) launches we herd like brainwashed sheep into atrocious long lines often days before this “best” is even available to be the first to have the “best.” But I guess that’s just the way evolution has preprogrammed us. Supported by Darwinian theory of survival of the fittest we, like active hunters, seek out the best in class, so that we have the right tools and resources to be the best version of ourselves. So with that I would like to present to you the best in class suncare, itemized by your lifestyle, skin type and protection level. This way you will be armed with the “best” as you spend the holiday weekend poolside, beachside or bbqside.

Best in Class Suncare

Active: Coppertone Sport Continuous Spray SPF 70+ mists your body with a weightless veil of essential protection that resists water and sweat. Skin feels bare as you spike that volleyball.

Beach Bound: If you’re like me you hate the way sand and your sticky body seem to be magnets for one another. That’s why I love Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 100. It’s virtually invisible, drying instantly while keeping UV damage at bay with their Helioplex complex of UV filters.

For the Kidos and the Family: I’m sure you read the last post where we covered the mildest yet most comprehensive sun protection so it should come as no surprise that I recommend Neutrogena Baby Lotion SPF 60. Yes I know your 3 year old is not a baby but this sunblock is formulated with physical filters that are naturally derived treating the skin as delicately as possible.

Sensitive Skin: You know the answer! We covered it last time!

Anti-Aging: It’s essential that your suncare care not only has broadspecturm protection but that is also fortified with super power antioxidants like vitamins C and E to protect skin from free radical damage. I recommend the Neutrogena Spectrum+ range with offerings for the face and body or La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 available in a fluid (so amazing!), lotion or milk.

Rolls Royce of Sun Protection: Available only abroad (and in some cases a stone throw away in Canada) the La Roche Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50+ is one of the most comprehensive, truly full spectrum protection sunscreens I’ve seen. An insider favorite, many European bound travelers end up smuggling and stockpiling this sun essential in their luggage. You can find it online through Canadian pharmacies.

Usage tip: Remember the 5 essentials rules! They should always be your sun mantra.

The result: Flawless, discerning protection custom chosen for you! I wish you, your family and friends a Happy 4th of July! Enjoy…but remember the sunscreen!

Green SPF

I can't tell you how tired I'm of reading yet another article about some sort of chemical ingredient causing cancer, severe allergic reactions or even fetal deformities. It seems like there's nothing left we can eat, drink, rub on ourselves, wash our clothes or even paint our houses with without worrying about the consequences. So the 15 year double digit growth of organic and natural products only makes sense in this environment. Despite recessions, budget cuts and trading down consumerism the natural and organic sector has thrived not because it's trendy but because there's a validity behind it...it's safer, better for you and for the environment. Luckily when it comes to sunscreen there is a widely available natural alternative.

Often referred to as organic filters, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the greener, more natural version of UV protection. Naturally derived and mineral based, these filters are used in "sunblocks" versus "sunscreen." Notice the difference! Sunscreens are made up of chemical filters (like avobenzone, octocrylene, etc) that absorb UV light and deactivate it from it's destructive nature. Sunblocks are actual physical blockers that act like a shield on the skin prohibiting UVA and UVB rays from penetrating the skin's surface. Providing full spectrum protection against all UV wavelengths these filters act as a wall sitting on the skin's surface. Therefore they are not absorbed into the epidermis making them ideal for sensitive skin and kids/babies. No breakouts, no allergic reactions just pure protection. That's probably why Neutrogena Sensitive Skin SPF 60+ Sunblock is made with "Puresceen technology" aka titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Years ago these sunblocks use to have a heavy white residue (remember the life guards?) but thanks to technology innovation these filters have become micronized to be as weightless and sheer as chemical sunscreens. For this invisible coverage also try the new Skinceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 designed to protect needy skin made ultra susceptible by cosmetic work like peels and lasers.

Usage tip: Sunblocks can be wiped off more easily by water and sweat so I would recommend reapply every 60 to 90 minutes especially if you're spending a lot of time in the pool or ocean.

The result: Natural broadspectrum protection for even the most sensitive or green oriented skin!

No Nonesense

There are some topics that are just so juicy they ooze sexiness, like the new come hither mascara or the cleavage enhancing bronzing technique...and then there are the other subject matters. Topics not as enticing or delicious but equally if not more important, like sun protection, an apt subject matter for the summer season and upcoming 4th of July holiday. So for the next few posts we will focus on the ins, outs and in-betweens of suncare. It won’t be juicy (think grade school sex ed vs experiential learning) but at least you will be become an expert in properly protecting yourself from harmful UV rays. With the incidence of melanoma not only on the rise but higher than the number of new cases of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer combined there’s no excuse in not being suncare savvy.
So to ease into the pain I thought it might be beneficial to start with the top 5 things you need to know about sun protection. Then in the coming posts we will cover the products, newest technologies and even techniques/tips to take your protection to the next level.

Suncare 101:

1.What does SPF mean?
SPF=Sun protection factor and is an indicator of how much UV exposure your skin can tolerate before burning while wearing sunscreen versus not being protected at all. So the higher the SPF the greater the shield. Some people like to do creative math and assume that if they're skin can tolerate 10 minutes of sun before burning then an SPF 50 will allow them to stay out for 500 minutes (10 x50). Unfortunately what this equation doesn't consider is the intensity of the UV rays. This is of course dependent on time (sun is always strongest around 2pm) location (UV rays are stronger in higher elevations and places closer to the equator). Bottom line? Apply sunscreen (an SPF 30 at a minimum but I recommend at least a 50).

2. How do I use it?
The greatest challenge is improper application. Often people are too stingy in the amount they apply so an SPF 50 becomes more like a 12. Here's the rule of thumb you should always follow. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside allowing the filters to set in and protect. Then you must reapply every 1-2 hours during the entire duration you are outside. Don't be cheap! Trust me the cost of lasering off suspicious moles is much pricier than a bottle of sunscreen. Always apply a shot glass full of sunscreen to your body and a nickle size to your face.

3. I think I might be Vitamin D deficient so can I skip the SPF?
All I can say is seriously?! If you want to argue your way out of this (which is impossible) try a more legitimate reasoning. The reality is you only need 10 minutes of sun to synthesize vitamin D. Chances are that you already get this during your daily outside time while running errands in a skirt or t-shirt (of course your face is still protected with a moisturizer plus SPF because sun exposure on legs or arms during those 10 minutes is all that's needed!).

4. Will sunscreens completely block photoaging (premature aging caused by the sun)?
The reality is there is no single sunscreen on the market that blocks all UVA and UVB and shields skin against infrared rays (made primarily from sun's heat). Instead boost your sun protection with antioxidants that help block any escaped UV or infrared damage. Layer an antioxidant-rich serum under your sunscreen or look for SPF's that are formulated with vitamin E like Neutrogena's new Spectrum. Make sure that your sunscreen does not include any vitamin A which has been found to become carcinogenic when exposed to sun.

5. I rarely burn when I'm in the sun so it must mean I'm ok using a lower or no SPF, right?
WRONG! Even that sun kissed tan of yours spells UV damage. Understand that tanning is your skin's natural defense mechanism to protect itself from sun damage. As you sit in the sun your skin starts to produce more melanin (pigment) which in turn form a barrier within the skin trying to shield the dermis (skin's deeper layer) from the harmful UV rays.

Usage tip: Something tells me that you have any enough tips from all the above. The only other things I can repeat for the millionth time is that this is not a joke. Melanoma is real and it can kill.

The result: Younger, healthier skin compliments of your newly acquired sun IQ.

Thermal Instincts

There are certain things in life that provide comfort and security...mom's cooking, an embrace, perhaps it may even be the feeling of freshly cut grass between your toes. For me the greatest sense of content and peace is found in the calming feeling of water. From enticing waves, to droplets of rain there's a therapeutic rush, perhaps that's why I've come to love scuba diving (who knew?!). But beyond the sensorial the benefits of water for mind, body and spirit have long been documented. From thermal baths to Turkish hamam's, water has a transforming restorative and healing power. Unfortunately we don't all have the time, location or resources to indulge in these treatments which is why like all great things I'm grateful for the bottled version readily at your disposal.

Water mists. An easily transporable alternative available to your morning, midday or night that harnesses the power of these nourishing spring waters. La Roche Posay and Avene both offer Thermal Spring Water mists containing soothing, softening waters concentrated in essential minerals, vitamins and antioxidants like Selenium. Clinically proven to treat and soothe even the most sensitive and needy skin from eczema to rosacea these super fine mists refresh, tone and calm skin. They're a great way to rehydrate and awaken skin from the midday slump or help set your makeup! The latter point being quite key. Ask any makeup artist and they will tell you the golden rule to help your makeup last: after applying all your makeup gently mist your face with these thermal waters to help lock it in. Simply mist and let the water the dry. And at the very least each time I spray I'm transported to that place that brings me the greatest sense of contentment.

Usage tip: Besides the reinvigorating, moisturizing or helping set your makeup, I love storing these mists in the fridge. Then on a hot summer day I take it out and spray my face. Instantly I'm cooled, energized and refreshed!

The result: The world's most fundamental element, let it transform and heal your skin anywhere, anytime.

Lipstick Effect

There’s effects that defy science, rational and reason. They surpass the constraints of textbooks, usurping any mathematical equation and yet they persist. Take for example the dating theory “you need a date to get a date.” It’s the infallible way how one scheduled date suddenly snowballs into multiple suitors. Or take the Calvin Klein Obsession men’s cologne effect. Zookeepers at the Bronx Zoo found that Jaguars liked to lick, kiss, rub and linger near anything sprayed with the cologne versus other fragrances. (Attention male readers: women are more discerning than these cats so don’t shower yourself in this cologne hoping for any attraction!). In previous economic downturns, researcher identified the lipstick effect: a double digit rise in lipstick sales while other beauty products experienced a downturn. The logic economists argued was that lipsticks were a low cost item that instantly made women feel better...that was of course until the current recession when the lipstick effect just wore off.

Well thanks to the man responsible for bringing sexy back in the ‘90’s (no it’s not JT!), we might experience a new lipstick effect otherwise known as the Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color Collection. Rich colors, creamy textures and classically sophisticated packaging will set your heart a flutter! Launched on June 1st this 12 shade collection has something for every lady. From a feminine, pinkish nude aptly called Blush Nude to a more vampy, sexy Black Orchid, each lipstick will envelope your lips with a nurturing veil of soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter and chamomilla flower oil. Made with intense color pigments the color goes on the way you would expect and stays true hours later. If that’s enough the lipsticks are housed in an all ivory case gilded with gold accents (would you expect anything else from the man responsible for those iconic sunglasses?). Now I know the price tag is hefty at a cool $45 (available at Saks, Neiman’s and Bergdorf) but you deserve to treat yourself every once in awhile and who knows the Tom Ford lipstick effect could equal Hollywood smooch sessions and perhaps even a promotion thanks to your stellar performance on the client presentation!

Usage tip: Make sure when you visit the beauty counter to really spend some time with the shades. Be realistic about the colors you gravitate toward and what your comfort level is with hue intensity. Think of this as an investment and you deserve great returns.

The result: Remember what Gucci under Tom Ford did for your wardrobe? Then imagine what he can do for your lips!

Simple Math

Here’s a confession….I’m a nerd. I think in terms of equations, numbers and algorithms. Years after my schooling the Pythagorean theorem (remember a2 + b2 = c 2 for triangles?) still makes perfect sense to me. I know you’re wondering what the hell this has to do with beauty but hang in there with me. So let’s move this mathematical thinking to our perception of beauty. What + what = radiant, youthful, healthy skin? I will just toss out a few ideas and you tell me which sounds right. Luminous? Dewy? Hydrated? Energized? Remember option D on the multiple choice tests which standed for “all the above” and it was always the right answer. Well this time is no exception. So the next part of this multi-step math problem is what universal product provides these elements?

Answer: MAC Strobe Cream! This one stop product rivals any algorithm or theorem. Supercharged with potent botanicals and vitamins including my all around favorite, a power shot of green tea, this moisturizer/luminizer/clarifier (it pretty much does everything) revives dull, fatigued skin. Delivering hydration and continuous antioxidant protection this multi-tasker instantly illuminates skin with iridescent particles while bolstering skin's own defense system for longterm radiance. Mix with your AM moisturizer (if you're not a foundation wearer) or add as a booster to your foundation to give your skin an freshening. Notice as the iridescent particles interact with all types of light to diffuse imperfections and energize skin. This is unquestionably the magic marker that hides the long night you may have had and gives your skin much needed tlc with a side of instant gratification.

Usage tip: For an extra awakening/energizing effect, store the cream in your fridge. Then when you apply the cool temperature will immediately tighten skin and restore your rosy glow. Use the cream to help highlight your features by applying to the bridge of your nose, above your brow bone, along the line of your upper lip and along your cheek bones.

The result: Think of this as the morning latte or espresso for your skin!

Eating Your Cake

What do you think of the term "fake it till you make it?" You see I've never been a person to fake anything...I've always come from the school of thought that it's the real thing or nothing (afterall I think we all know how to spot the fake Louis' and Cartier's). But ever so often there comes a time where the most prideful of us need to bend our strong convictions for that exception. In this case the exception would be tanning. The reality is we all love that bronze beach goddess color but know the hazards of tanning (wrinkles, sun spots, sagging, let me know when you get the picture). But luckily shade patrol doesn't equal a chalky white color. With the plethora of self-tanning products available an enviable sun inspired glow is just a bottle away. The key? Your technique. Like all things there's a right way and wrong way of doing it.

How to Fake a Natural Tan

1. Exfoliate! This helps remove dead skin cells for an even base.

2. After towel drying apply a thin layer of body moisturizer paying special attention to drier areas like the elbows.

3. My favorite self tanner is St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Lotion because it gives a true "bronzed" color versus the orangey tinge more often achieved through self tanners. A word to the wise, this lotion will give your skin a deep tan so if you are fairer or want more control over the color I suggest St. Tropez Gradual Tan Mousse. The mousse has a lower amount of DHA (the molecule which interacts with your skin to develop the color) so the tanning effect will be more mild. Apply the product from the bottom up starting at your legs and working up to your chest and arms. Smooth onto skin and apply with long, firm strokes. Avoid rubbing in which could lead to streakiness or darker spots. Systematically apply making sure to never miss a spot (which includes gently applying to tops of feet and back of hands) and blend carefully. Remember the goal is to look sun kissed so no bare spots! Side note: I never like to apply self tanner to my face...rather I think this is an effect better left to makeup. That way you can contour, define and bronze in a controlled manner. We will cover this soon.

4. Don't put any clothes on for at least 10 minutes to let the product properly dry and when you do finally clothe avoid whites which could show some rub off of the tanning product. Shower 4 hours later at which time your bronze color should be fully developed.

Usage tip: If you do end up with streakiness or dark spots take a lemon and gently rub it over the area to help smooth out the color. Apply the self tanning lotion once a week or the mousse every other day to maintain your color. If you want to deepen the tan apply more frequently.

The result: Bronze goddess sans the sun induced wrinkles and age spots...I think they call that having your cake and eating it too!

Certified Discreteness

Don’t you just love to keep people guessing? In the overly exposed, reality show centric society we’ve become it seems only normal that the stranger in the Starbucks line should know about that weird rash you can’t seem to get rid of and how your match.com profile is getting more hits than the latest celeb sex video (note to everyone please maintain your spa voices when you’re on the phone in public places including the train, elevator and coffee lines….no one really cares to hear about your problems). I think it’s time for a countermovement: something discreet yet sinful, covert yet headturningly intriguing. And what better place to start this coyness than with your lips.

Think an egg shaped sphere that rivals any new I-gadget, contouring perfectly to hands with the softest touch. Donned in the runway’s Spring/Summer pastel colors, it could be more of an accessory than a lip treatment. I’m of course referring to the eos (standing for evolution of smooth) Smooth Sphere Lip Balm. Available in 4 mouth watering flavors (cause afterall we do taste our lip products), the perfectly round balm snuggles the lips enveloping it with rich, emollient butters (shea) and oils (coconut, olive and jojoba) for thirst quenching essential moisture. Lips transform from crackled and dehydrated to soft, pillowy smoothness. Certified organic (with the exception of the newest addition, the Lemon Drop with SPF 15), these paraben- and petrochemical-free will make even the most skeptical fall head over heels in love (just be prepared to hear where’s that other lip balm…you know that cool, round one?). And just to keep you guessing, I saved the best part for last at $3.49 a pop you not only need to buy every flavor (I love the Summer Fruit) but need one for every essential place (your bag, car, desk, nightstand).

Usage tip: If you like to apply a lipstick for color layer this lip balm under it to reap the benefits of both worlds. Apply when lips feel dry and at the very least every AM and PM to nurture your puckers.

The result: Your lips will never feel so smooth, so soft, so voluptuous but I never kiss and tell!
